About Pangasius farming

Pangasius (Tra) fish belongs to the Pangasiidae family of catfish with the scientific name of Pangasius hypophthalmus, which is native to the Mekong Delta including Vienam and some other neighbouring countries (Laos, Cambodia and Thai Land). It was originally cautch in the Great Lake of Cambodia. Farmers along the Mekong River started raising this fish since the 50’s but farming was not commercialized until the 90’s.

Pangasius was first grown in floating cages and then in open aquaculture ponds along the river since 2003. The old technique of cage farming has been surpassed by the new technique of pond farming. Pangasius is currently farmed all over the Mekong Delta along Tien and Hau Rivers (which are the two branches of Mekong River running through Vietnam).

New technique of pond farming

Structure of a pond

A pond usually was constructed over an area of 0.5 - 1ha with an average depth of 3.0-3.5 m.

Ponds are located in areas which are not polluted and have plentiful water. Alluvial islands are suitable for pond construction. A pond has two gates to exhange water with river and release water to the settlement pond.

Farming Process

1. Nursery

Fish eggs are produced from sperms and eggs from parent fish.

Eggs are hatched artificially in tanks. After hatchery, fish powder is raised in tanks for 10 days then moved to pond nursery.

Baby fish is grown in pond for 3 months, then transferred to food-sized fish farming.

2. Food sized fish farming

Fingerlings are stocked in ponds for food-sized fish farming with the density of 30-35 con/m2

Fish is farmed for 6 months to reach the weight of 900gr-1.2 kg then harvested.

Some requirements for fish farming

Ponds have to be located in farming areas not polluted and monitored by the authorities.

Pump the water in from the river through the pond gate.

Pump mud out from the pond bottom every 3 months.

After harvest and before a new cycle pond has to be emptied, mud pumped out, pond edges cleaned up and repaired. Then spray lime over the pond bottom and edges. Pond bottm should be dried off for 2-3 days.

Feeding and usage of vitamines and medicines (not in the ban list) have to be properly recorded in diary.

Water released from pond has to be settled (by the settlement pond) before going back to the river.

Fish Feed

Pangasius is fed with industrial fish meal with suitable sizes and protein contents.

Fish feed is supplied by reliable companies including Proconco, Uni President, CP, etc. with certification of no usage of GMO and animal originated ingredients and banned chemicals.

Farming projects of Vinh Hoan

1. Nursery of 7 ha to supply 70 million fingerlings

2. Fish ponds

  • Chau Ma Island of 7ha to supply 4,200 tons of raw material
  • Tan Hoa Island of 17ha to supply 10,200 tons of raw material
  • Tan Thanh Island of 14.5ha to supply 8,700 tons of raw material
  • Tan Thuan Tay area of 14.7 ha to supply 8,820 tons of raw material
  • Tan Thuan Dong area of 80ha to supply 48,000 tons of raw material
  • My Xuong area of 23 ha to supply 13,800 tons of raw material
  • Binh Thanh area of 21.8ha to supply 13,080 tons of raw material
  • My Hiep area of 6ha to supply 3,600 tons of raw material

These ponds are targeted to supply 50% of raw material input for the company.

3. Feed mill

We are building a feed mill with the capacity of 240 tons per day to supply fish feed to the company owned farms and our raw material suppliers.

4. Aquatic veterinary medicines center

The Aquatic veterinary medicines center was established in April 2007 to distribute vitamines and medicines for the company farms.

Material supllied to Vinh Hoan factories

Pangasius raw material is currently supplied to our factories from:

  • The company ponds which are scheduled to supply 50% of the demand of raw material by end of 2008.
  • Invested ponds in accordance with co-operations to share profit and guaranteed purchase.
  • Contracted ponds signed with individual farmers.

Before harvest raw material is tested for anti-biotics. Only qualified raw material is receipt to the factories.

Live fish is transported to the factories by well boats with the transporation time of 30 pminutes to 2 hours.
